Getting Oxygen
The air you breathe enters your respiratory system through your nose and mouth. It passes down the trachea, bronchi and bronchioles, ending up in the alveoli. The walls of the alveoli are only one cell thick and are surrounded by blood capillaries. Oxygen dissolves at the moist surface of the alveoli and moves by diffusion across the short distance from the space inside the alveoli to the blood.
When oxygen enters the blood, it combines with haemoglobin in the red blood cells. The flow of blood carries the oxygen away, so the concentration in the alveoli and the blood never become equal. In this way, oxygen continues to move into the blood.
